The season of screen across the Tasman

1 month. 3 events. Countless opportunities.

Australia and New Zealand have always retained a close (if competitive) relationship. A recent slate of stellar AUS/NZ co-productions showcase the heights that can be achieved when creative forces combine across the Tasman Sea.

These include children’s fantasy series, The New Legends of Monkey (See-Saw Films) and action-packed, sci-fi drama, Cleverman (Goalpost Pictures Australia) – both nominated for Screen Producers Australia Awards – and of course Top of the Lake (See-Saw Films & Escapade Pictures), filmed in Queenstown, NZ and now distributed in over a dozen countries with Primetime Emmy, Logie, AACTA and Monte-Carlo TV Festival awards and nominations under its belt.

“There is a synergy between Australian and New Zealand filmmakers that should be celebrated, shared and built upon in the years to come,” said Screen Producers Australia, CEO, Matthew Deaner. “We are proud to partner with our New Zealand counterparts, SPADA, as well as WCSFP, to present a suite of events with individual foci, but a shared objective of allowing the screen industry to meet, learn and do business.”

To mark the occasion, SPA, SPADA and WCSFP are offering exclusive industry discounts to all three events.

SPADA Conference

Kicking off the celebration of screen, the 26th Annual SPADA Conference is exploring the theme of “The Power of Emotion“. Emotions infuse every aspect of our lives, and creating powerful and diverse stories puts emotions front and center.  From the writer, to the director, to the producer, to the DOP, to the funders, to the actors, to the audience, emotions are what drive us to take an idea from inception to the screen.

Taking place in Wellington from 15 – 16 November, the Conference will feature the NZ On Air John O’Shea Memorial Address, exciting international and domestic speakers, sessions, workshops and masterclasses. The Conference will also continue its tradition of recognising excellence, talent, and commitment with its Annual Awards.
